How Indian Architecture Changed Through the Centuries
Trace Indian architecture from Indus cities and ancient caves to grand temples, Mughal monuments, colonial landmarks and sustainable buildings in India today.
Indian architecture has evolved over more than four thousand years. From the planned cities of the Indus Valley Civilization to rock-cut caves, monumental temples, Mughal tombs, colonial landmarks and sustainable modern buildings, every period introduced new ideas.
However, newer styles rarely erased older traditions. Indian architects repeatedly adapted existing craftsmanship, local materials and regional knowledge to meet changing religious, political and environmental needs.
Indus Valley Architecture, c. 2600–1900 BCE
The earliest major phase of urban architecture in the Indian subcontinent appeared during the Indus Valley Civilization.
Cities such as Mohenjo-daro, Harappa, Dholavira and Lothal were organised with carefully planned streets, residential areas, wells and drainage systems. Builders used standardised baked bricks, suggesting that measurements and construction practices were regulated across different settlements.
Many houses had inner courtyards, bathing spaces and access to covered drains. Dholavira, located in present-day Gujarat, became particularly notable for its reservoirs and water-conservation system.
Unlike later periods, the surviving Indus cities do not contain enormous palaces or richly decorated temples. Their most important architectural achievement was practical urban planning centred on sanitation, water management and organised civic life.
Mauryan Architecture, c. 322–185 BCE
Indian architecture changed significantly under the Mauryan Empire, especially during Emperor Ashoka’s reign in the third century BCE.
Earlier buildings often relied on timber, mud brick and other perishable materials. Mauryan builders began using carefully cut and polished stone for pillars, monuments and religious structures.
Ashoka commissioned stone pillars carrying inscriptions across his empire. Buddhist stupas also became important during this period. The Great Stupa at Sanchi was originally commissioned in the third century BCE and later enlarged.
Architecture was no longer limited to housing or administration. It became a powerful way to communicate religious teachings and imperial authority.
Buddhist Rock-Cut Architecture, c. 2nd Century BCE–7th Century CE
From around the second century BCE, builders began carving prayer halls, monasteries and shrines directly into cliffs.
Important sites included Bhaja, Karla, Kanheri, Ajanta and Ellora. These complexes contained chaityas, which were prayer halls, and viharas, which served as residences for monks.
The Ajanta Caves were developed between approximately the second century BCE and sixth century CE. Their pillars, sculptures and paintings brought architecture and visual storytelling together.
Early caves often copied the appearance of wooden buildings. Beams and rafters were carved into stone even when they had no structural purpose. By the sixth and seventh centuries CE, rock-cut architecture had also become important in Hindu and Jain traditions.
Early Hindu Temples, c. 4th–8th Century CE
During the Gupta period, builders increasingly constructed free-standing temples from brick and stone.
These early temples generally centred on the garbhagriha, or inner sanctum, where the principal deity was placed. A porch or pillared entrance was often attached to it.
The Dashavatara Temple at Deogarh, generally dated to the early sixth century CE, demonstrates the growing importance of temple towers and sculpted exterior walls.
Between the seventh and eighth centuries, the structural temples at Mahabalipuram showed the transition from rock-cut monuments to free-standing stone architecture. The Kailasa Temple at Ellora, created during the eighth century, took the opposite approach by carving an entire temple complex downward from a single mass of basalt.
Regional Temple Architecture, c. 8th–13th Century CE
As regional kingdoms grew more powerful, temple architecture became larger and more distinctive.
In northern India, the Nagara tradition developed curving towers called shikharas. In southern India, the Dravidian tradition used pyramid-shaped vimanas and increasingly large temple compounds. Builders in the Deccan experimented with features associated with both traditions.
The Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur was completed around 1010 CE under Chola emperor Rajaraja I. Its massive granite construction and towering vimana made it a landmark of South Indian architecture.
The Khajuraho temples were built mainly between approximately 950 and 1050 CE. Their clustered towers and richly sculpted walls created a strong sense of vertical movement.
Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu, developed during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, became known for complex plans and exceptionally detailed stone carving.
Temples during this period were not only places of worship. Many also supported education, music, dance, administration and economic activity.
Delhi Sultanate Architecture, 1206–1526
The Delhi Sultanate introduced architectural ideas connected with Central and West Asia. Mosques, tombs, forts, madrasas and monumental gateways became prominent.
Arches, domes, minarets and large courtyards gained importance. However, these features were not simply copied from foreign buildings. Indian craftspeople adapted them using local stone, decorative traditions and construction methods.
Construction of the Qutb Minar began around 1199 and continued under later rulers. Its surrounding complex reveals how early Indo-Islamic architecture combined new religious requirements with Indian craftsmanship.
Regional Sultanates in Gujarat, Bengal and the Deccan later developed distinctive styles suited to their materials and climates.
Mughal Architecture, 1526–1857
Mughal architecture combined Persian and Central Asian planning with Indian materials and craftsmanship.
Humayun’s Tomb, completed around 1570, introduced a monumental garden-tomb arrangement that influenced later Mughal buildings.
Emperor Akbar developed Fatehpur Sikri mainly between 1571 and 1585. Its red sandstone palaces, courtyards, gateways and pillared halls combined features from several regional traditions.
Mughal architecture became more symmetrical and refined under Shah Jahan. The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632, and its principal mausoleum was completed around 1648. White marble, floral inlay, calligraphy, formal gardens and carefully balanced proportions created a unified architectural composition.
Mughal forms also influenced Rajput palaces, Sikh monuments and other regional buildings.
Colonial Architecture, c. 1500s–1947
European traders introduced churches, forts and warehouses to coastal India from the sixteenth century onward.
British architecture became especially influential during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Early government buildings frequently followed European classical designs. Gothic Revival architecture later appeared in railway stations, universities and administrative buildings.
Mumbai’s Victoria Terminus, now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, was completed in 1888. It combined European Gothic planning with Indian decorative craftsmanship.
The Indo-Saracenic style later brought European layouts together with Indian and Islamic domes, arches, chhatris and minarets. New Delhi, formally inaugurated in 1931, combined monumental European planning with selected Indian architectural elements.
Modern Indian Architecture, 1947–2000
After independence in 1947, architecture became part of India’s effort to express modernity and national progress.
Chandigarh, developed principally during the 1950s and 1960s, became India’s best-known modernist city. Its plan used organised sectors, geometric forms and exposed concrete.
Indian architects later adapted modernism to local needs. Charles Correa used courtyards and climate-sensitive planning. Balkrishna Doshi combined modern design with Indian patterns of community life. Laurie Baker promoted affordable buildings made with local materials and energy-efficient methods.
Contemporary Architecture, 2000–Present
Contemporary Indian architecture is shaped by rapid urbanisation, technological development and environmental concerns.
Modern cities contain glass towers, metro systems, airports and large residential projects. At the same time, architects are returning to traditional methods such as courtyards, jaalis, shaded corridors and natural ventilation.
Rainwater harvesting, solar energy, recycled materials and passive cooling are becoming increasingly important. Historic buildings are also being adapted into hotels, offices and cultural centres instead of being demolished.
Indian architecture has therefore developed through layers rather than complete breaks. Ancient urban planning, temple geometry, Islamic arches, Mughal gardens, colonial civic design and modern technology continue to coexist. Together, they reveal how India’s society, beliefs and ways of living changed across more than four thousand years.
